KF-21 IRST(Infra-Red Search and Track)

IRST is a high-tech sensor of small-size and light weight which searches and tracks threat targets approaching to the aircraft and provides tracking information, thus performing the function of aircraft protection.

KF-21 IRST(Infra-Rd Search and Track) Device is using infra-red sensor to search and track threat targets from afar without electromagnetic radiation. Hanwha Systems’ IRST Device applies LWIR(Long Wavelength InfraRed) detector which works best for long distance air targets, so it has Beyond Visual Range functions, which significantly improves the survivability of fighter jets.

IRST searches and tracks targets and provide avionics system with tracking information including threat target’s azimuth, elevation, distance, etc., performing the function of aircraft protection. As a sub-mission, it also provides infra-red images to assist pilot’s forward observation. Since IRST complements radar’s weaknesses, while enhancing stealth functions, it is the key device for the future fighter jet, suitable for the future warfare environment.

As Korea’s only IRST developer, We completed IRST system development for naval vessel protection and acquired technology and experiences for multiple target search and track, and system integration. Many other countries are also developing IRST technology to improve its long distance search functions and make it smaller and lighter. Based on the experience and technological expertise, we developed KF-21 IRST device, securing core technologies of IRST.

Mounted on the right upper part of KF-21’s fuselage(front), IRST makes wide area search; detects infrared energy emanated from air targets, performs multiple target tracking and single target precision tracking; and provides target tracking information to the airplane’s flight systems to improve the survivability of airplanes.
