Hanwha Systems (HSC) to make 30 million dollar investment in Kymeta, a U.S. corporation

Posted date
2020.12.24
Hanwha Systems (CEO: Youn Chul Kim) is making an aggressive investment in Kymeta’s core metamaterial-based antenna technologies for the rapidly growing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) antenna market.

On 24th December, Hanwha Systems agreed to invest $30 million US dollars (approx. KRW 33 billion won) in Kymeta, a leading U.S. company focused on the commercialization of its metamaterial based Electronically Steerable Antenna (ESA), subject to U.S. regulatory approval. HSC and Kymeta plan to collaborate to develop LEO antenna solutions for the South Korean markets and beyond.

Kymeta is a highly promising company incorporated in 2012 in the State of Washington, U.S. It successfully developed a commercial ESA based on meta-material technology. Backed by U.S. and international patents and licenses, the Kymeta terminal addresses the need for lightweight, slim, and high-throughput communication systems that do not require mechanical components to steer toward a satellite. Kymeta makes connecting easy – for any vehicle, vessel, or fixed platform.

The aim of HSC is to invest in Kymeta’s meta-material-based antenna technology, which is well suited for a variety use cases. HSC is aggressively trying to gain a foothold in the Low Earth Orbit antenna market, a potential future growth engine for the company.

Mr. Youn Chul Kim, CEO of Hanwha Systems, maintained that, “the objective of our investment in Kymeta is to enter low orbit satellite antenna market early on, and diversify our technology portfolio. Based on HSC’s top-notch defense communication and radar technologies, we are joining hands with this promising U.S. satellite antenna company. All these efforts will further strengthen HSC’s aerospace system capabilities.”

The market volume for satellite communication antenna has grown steadily and is expected to reach KRW 50 trillion won in 2026. U.S. companies, namely, Amazon and Space X, and OneWeb of UK are now entering into low orbit satellite internet service business in earnest.
